When the San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames rang in the new year together on Dec. 31, it made for real on-ice fireworks. They played an angry brand of hockey that saw the Flames come away with an 8-5 victory on home ice and left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Sharks thanks to some chippy play.

The Sharks won their battle in San Jose earlier in the year with a more tightly checked 3-1 decision back in northern California. So what do I expect in this one?

The Pick: OVER (6.5) via MyBookie
Total chaos. And in the most enjoyable way. I love the over, as usual.

It’s hard to imagine a team like the Flames being tagged with anything less than a 6.5 over for the rest of the year given their propensity for scoring a lot of goals.

And because of the bad blood between these Pacific Division frontrunners, the action will be lightning quick and perhaps somewhat of a distraction from the defensive game that is usually so encouraged post all-star break. These two forward groups are as deep as they get in the NHL, and the goaltenders are going to be tested.

Take the over and hope for a perfect sequel to the New Year’s Eve explosion.
